Bi-Cx

Bi-Convex Lens

Bi-convex lenses are typically utilized for focusing applications and for image magnification, the most basic being a magnifying glass. The radius (curvature angle) of the surfaces have a direct relationship to the focal point and magnification factor. The more curved the surface (the smaller the radius), the shorter the focal length. This is due to the properties of light refraction - when the surface is more curved, light waves are refracted at a greater angle with reference to the lens optical axis. Bi-Convex lenses will keep spherical aberration to a minimum when image and object are located at an equal distance. A fully symmetric bi-convex optical system at 1:1 magnification results in minimum spherical aberration values, with distortion and coma equally minimized or cancelled. The sweet spot for keeping aberrations at a minimum for Bi-Convex lenses is between magnification factors of 0.2x and 5x.
